In 2002, three Framework courses
will be operating – Construction, Hospitality and Information
Technology catering for over 100 students.
Shoalhaven High is innovative
in its approach to VET as is evident by the following initiatives.
Construction
students spend the majority of their class time “on the job”.
Complete with mobile workshop, they climb aboard the 15 seater bus
(owned by Peter Hill) and travel to the day’s job. Projects
undertaken in 2001 were:
- Culburra Surf Club – assisting with
the building & painting of the new club house.
- Shoalhaven High School – building
many bench seats around the school for student use.
The number of students choosing Construction
has doubled for 2002, no doubt due to the unusual approach Peter
has taken in teaching this framework course.
Hospitality,
always a popular course has tripled their numbers for 2002 with
three classes operating in the Preliminary year. This may be due
to the fully equipped commercial kitchen that was installed in 2001.
Hospitality students regularly take part
in the annual Worldskills competition and have achieved considerable
success.
- 2002 – Creativity Award
- 2001 – Creativity & OH&S
awards
- 2000 – Ist and 2nd in regional competition
Work placement in Hospitality has seen a
partnership grow between the school and 2 local businesses –
Worrigee House and the Sportsman’s club. Students go out to
Work Placement two at a time throughout the year, spending one week
at each business. In this way, interruptions to school are kept
to a minimum and both work places have a consistent approach to
students. Students can also pick up extra experience and work placement
hours by volunteering to work at other functions held by both work
places.
Information Technology
is now in its fourth year and will operate two classes in 2002.
Students operate the IT “HELP” desk for the school.
They are attached to faculties around the school where they gain
valuable “on the job” experience solving a variety of
tasks and freeing up the computer coordinator from more mundane
tasks.
IT students have been involved in Worldskills
for the past 2 years with the following achievements.
- 2002 – 2nd place
- 2001 – 2nd and 4th place
- 2000 – 2nd place
Shoalhaven high has 4 computer labs –
Two of these are at Industry standard and each operates on a different
platform – Mac and PC.
Part-Time Traineeships
2002 will see Shoalhaven High School host the first school based
part-time traineeship in the Shellharbour district. Greg has worked
as a sports assistant at the school for the past three years will
take on Sports Administration under the guidance of Lez Freeman.
Lez is one of the directors of Millennium Events that have organised
many Australian events including the Olympic Marathon and Australian
Triathlons.
Shoalhaven High is in a unique position
to offer this traineeship as Lez Freeman brings with him a wealth
of expertise that would be hard to find elsewhere.
